October Patchwork
October 1997
(Bits and pieces of Campus to Club)
To: Seminole Club Leadership
From: Betty Lou Joanos, Associate Alumni Director
So much has happened since the August PATCHWORK, I feel as though we have
been on a Seminole Rollercoaster with one thrill after another! Included in
these last packed weeks have been the excitement of returning students and
the beginning of the '97 Football Season. Events included: Picture Day, the
Alumni Association's 47th Kick-Off luncheon and wonderful trips for FSU
football to Southern California and Clemson, as well as the activity filled
6th ANNUAL SEMINOLE CLUB LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE. How about those three tough
fought, won, and hot football games?
Sincere appreciation is extended to the Southern California Seminole Club
under the leadership of President DANA VAILL for the greatest of Seminole
hospitality. Ditto to the Upper South Carolina Seminoles under the
leadership of CREIGHTON DOUGLAS. Both clubs were not content with just one
weekend function, but each hosted TWO greatly successful events.
Thanks to all of you Club, Alumni and Booster leaders who made the annual
pilgrimage to the LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE. Outstanding club awards were more
numerous than ever as the following were recognized: DIVISION I - South
Carolina Midlands, Seminole Club of Flagler County; DIVISION II - The
Seminole Club of Lake County, Seminole Club of Clay County, Martin County
Seminole Boosters, Inc.; DIVISION III - Seminole Club of North Texas;
DIVISION IV - The Atlanta Seminole Club, Palm Beach County Seminole Club,
Seminole Club of Greater Orlando, Jacksonville Seminole Club.
Alum DOUGLAS MANNHEIMER, Past Chairman of Seminole Boosters Inc., Chairman
of the Board of University Center Club, and on and on in Seminole
activities was welcomed into the Alumni Association's highest circle - the
Circle of Gold.
Last week while in New Haven, Connecticut, we had the opportunity to visit
with the president of our newest Seminole Club, DR. JIM ECKERT and wife
Suzanne. THE INTERNET SEMINOLE CLUB, is the first Internet - based
alumni/booster club of which we are aware. The ISC was founded with the
idea of uniting Alumni, Boosters and friends of the University who are
displaced geographically or otherwise prohibited from forming, or becoming
physically involved in a local Seminole Club. Jim's e-mail is:

CAMPUS CAPSULE
For the second year in a row, FSU was ranked as THE MOST EFFICIENT
UNIVERSITY by US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT, and also listed as one of the best
college buys by MONEY MAGAZINE. Fortunately the University slid to sixth as
a party school.
At a recent ceremony in Washington, D.C., the John Templeton Foundation
announced its biannual Honor Roll of CHARACTER BUILDING COLLEGES. FSU was
the only state university in Florida chosen.
The new dance department chairperson, ELIZABETH "LIBBY" PATENAUDE replaces
DR. NANCY SMITH FICHTER, who remains as artist-in-residence. Libby was
previously chair of the flagship dance program at Columbia College, SC.
Two programs in the School of Music have been recognized as the best in the
nation according to a prestigious music education journal. Both MUSIC

CLIFFORD MADSEN and DR. JAYNE STANDLEY.
Social Work professor Dr. CHARLES FIGLEY was named FAMILY PSYCHOLOGIST OF
THE YEAR by the American Psychological Association for his distinguished
and sustained service in the field.
FSU students and faculty will be the first in the world to gain free access
to a new research service with access to 1.3 billion documents. The
LEXIS-NEXIS Universe service, an Internet project two years in the making,
will make millions of documents available to students and faculty.
FSU and THE OPEN UNIVERSITY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM unveiled a new technology
center with the announcement of the first eminent scholar chair and
master's program in distance learning in the United States. The Center,
located at Suite 3500 C, University Center, links FSU with the OU,
headquartered at Milton Keynes, England. The OU is the recognized leader of
distance education in the English-speaking world. DR. DAVID GRAHAM
HAWKRIDGE, a scientist, educator and one of the founding professors of the
OU was introduced as the MCI Eminent Scholar. The position was made
possible through a $1 million donation from MCI matched by $750,000 from
the state.
In PRESIDENT D'ALEMBERTE's yearly report on the state of the university, he
discussed the success of FSU's fund-raising efforts, improvements in
technology, and the school's emphasis on teaching. To date, the FSU
Foundation's campaign that garners money from private sources has raised
over $278 million.
Many opportunities are available for clubs to continue to give to specific
areas of the University. The WESTCOTT BRICK PROJECT: a named brick for $100
if still available. Contact Fred Maglione, 850-644-9501.
THE WERKMEISTER HUMANITIES READING ROOM, once the location of the main

will assist with their care, and in return you get to name your monkey

color photo of your monkey with its biography and a FSU-PANAMA certificate
showing the name you chose. Call 850-644-3505.
SPORTS
Twelve former student athletes including professional volleyball tour
member GABRIELLE REECE, Olympic silver medalist KIM BATTEN, Miami Dolphin
LAWRENCE DAWSEY, and Florida Army National Guard MAJOR GENERAL RONALD
HARRISON, track and cross country, were inducted into the FSU HALL OF FAME.
Other inductees were: Derek Schmidt, FSU's football career scoring leader
with 393 points from 1984-87; SCOTT WARREN; PAUL SORRENTO, now a first
baseman with the Seattle Mariners; current PGA golfer NOLAN HENKE; JACK
SHARP, gymnastics; BUFFY BAKER, tennis; DEE FRYE-DAVIS, former longtime
secretary to athletics directors and a force behind the Hall of Fame; and
retired Business Professor RICHARD BAKER, who served as a leader of the
Athletic Committee for many years, received the MOORE-STONE award.
FSU recently hosted an AGENT DAY and is one of the few schools in the
country that has created a day for agents to come on campus and speak to
potential professional athletes. Created last year and designed by FSU
compliance officers ROBERT MINNIX and BRIAN MAND, the day introduces
athletes to agents in a private setting at the Moore Athletic Center.
THE OFFICIAL WEB SITE OF SEMINOLE ATHLETICS was launched on September 2nd.

ESPN reporter Chilton surveyed 1,719 US males, ages 18-44, who live in
households with annual incomes of $50,000 or more as to their favorite
college football teams. FSU was the fourth ranked school behind Notre Dame,
Penn State, and Michigan.
Playing hard in the first three football games of the year, some team
members made the record book. ANDRE WADSWORTH and DARYL BUSH broke into the
record books for career tackles for loss. Wadsworth has 20, sixth-best in
FSU history and Bush has 19. Biletnikoff Award candidate E. G. GREEN
extended his streak of consecutive games with a catch to 30 with an eight
yard reception on the last play of the first quarter. Green's streak ties
an FSU record shared by Ron Sellers and Lawrence Dawsey. Green is now in
eighth place in career receptions (123), seventh place in career yardage
(2,087) and fifth in touchdown receptions (20).
THAD BUSBY broke into the top 10 in several career categories. His 3,515
career yards and 25 touchdown passes both rank 10th in FSU's record book.
His back-to-back, three hundred yard passing performances against Maryland
and Clemson mark only the ninth time an FSU quarterback has accomplished
the feat. PETER WARRICK's ninety yard punt return was the longest in Death
Valley history, the longest ever against Clemson, and the second-longest in
FSU history. WARRICK and FEASTER combined for 150 yards on punt returns,
the most ever against Clemson breaking a fifty-six year old record.
Senior defensive end ANDRE WADSWORTH was named a Burger King College
Football Scholarship Award Winner. A $10,000 scholarship will be given to
the school's general scholarship fund in his name. DARYL BUSH received the
honor last year.
Baseball COACH MIKE MARTIN lost his top signee, pitcher MICHAEL CUDDYER, to
the Minnesota Twins. About to sign with FSU, he was then offered a $1.85
million package, and Cuddyer accepted. It has been announced that FSU's
baseball team will face the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the major league team's
first exhibition game February 26th. The game will be played at St.
Petersburg's Al Lang Stadium.
FSU's BASKETBALL schedule includes home games against two Final Four teams:
National Champion Arizona on Dec. 23 and ACC foe North Carolina three days
earlier. The tentative season opener is at Rice on Nov. 14. The first ACC
road game is Jan. 3rd at North Carolina State. Four of FSU's first six ACC
games will be played on the road against NC State, Clemson, Georgia Tech
and Maryland. FSU will play Florida in the Milk Challenge on Dec. 14th,
which is the only time these two rivals will meet during the season. For
tickets with the ORLANDO SEMINOLES call 407-648-0037.
New women's basketball COACH SUE SEMRAU has spent as many days out of
Tallahassee as she has here, after accepting the position. She first
visited all of her players, has been recruiting, and has been a guest
speaker at many Seminole Clubs.
FSU's LADY SEMINOLE VOLLEYBALL TEAM bounced back after a heart breaking
loss to Florida by beating NC State. The loss to Florida ended their
winning streak (9-0), breaking the school record for the best start in FSU
women's volleyball history, eclipsing the 1982 record of eight straight
wins.
FSU sprinter CASEY CUSTER was honored by the NCAA as Florida's Woman of the
Year. The award is given to the top female student-athlete who excelled in
three areas - academics, athletics and community service. All woman
athletes from the state's NCAA schools were eligible.
FSU's BRENDON DEDEKIND placed fourth in the fifty meter freestyle at the
Pan Pacific swim meet in Fukuoka, Japan, with a time of 22.79 seconds.
Dedekind, a South African who will be a junior, finished tied for 16th in
the one hundred meter freestyle earlier in the week.
The US Walker Cup team defeated the Britain-Ireland team at Scarsdale, NY.
The team was captained for the second time by former FSU golf star DOWNING
GRAY, who is now a Pensacola insurance executive. Downing was once the
runner-up in the US Amateur and shot the low score for an amateur in the
1967 Masters. Other bragging points for golf alumni include HUBERT GREEN,
JEFF SLUMAN and PAUL AZINGER, who have previously won the PGA Championship.
Former FSU football player, HERSCHEL TUCKER WALLER was inducted into the
Slow Pitch Softball Hall of Fame. One of 136 men and women honored since
the Hall began in 1957. Waller, a native of tiny Vernon, FL, was an
all-state quarterback and pitcher who came to FSU on a football scholarship
in 1962. An injury ended his baseball career, but he continued to play
football. He was introduced to slow pitch softball by FSU physical
education professor Dr. PETE EVERETT.
TOMMY SUTER, a FSU Law student spent his summer enduring the rigorous
schedule of a pro soccer player. He was a member of the Tallahassee
Scorpions.
On October 19, STRENGTH COACH DAVE VAN HALANGER will coach a football team
of former FSU players against a German Squad. The 3:00pm. game against the
Blue Devils is a charity exhibition to benefit the TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT's
Caring Connection and FSU's Department of Physical Education.

first-year club members must serve.
