July Patchwork
Today, Seminoles around the world not only welcome and celebrate the coming
of the July 4th holiday, but the welcoming of STEVE ROBINSON, FSU's new
men's basketball coach. Robinson leaves his position as Tulsa's head coach,
with a 46-18 record in two seasons. Those teams made NCAA Tournament
appearances in 1996 and 97. Player LaMarr Greer summed up the feelings on
campus when he said, "I'm a happy man. I've got a coach.....and the best
thing about him is, he's not used to losing and I love that. I know he's
going to be very disciplined, expect us to work hard and we want to work
hard."
In June, the Alumni Association awarded their prestigious CIRCLE OF GOLD
awards to two deserving alumni at separate occasions. First, JIM MILLER
'49, one of the founders of the Pensacola Seminole Club and former board
member of both the FSU Alumni Association and Seminole Boosters, was
recognized for his many years of dedicated service to his alma mater at a
club meeting in Pensacola. A week later, at the annual banquet of the
Alumni Association, outgoing chairman, DR. DAVID SMITH of Jay, was
presented his award following a video showing of his medical practice in
rural northwest Florida. This heartwarming film was produced by FSU 's
Program in Medical Sciences of which Dr. Smith is a proud alum. In
attendance were special guests including: FATHER TERRY MORGAN, President of
the Vatican City Seminole Club; Captain Lyn Hutton, Commander of the Key
West Naval Base and ALAN SUNDBERG, former Chief Justice, Florida Supreme
Court, and recently appointed FSU General Counsel.
New Alumni Association officers were also introduced at the annual meeting.
CYNTHIA TUNNICLIFF of Tallahassee, Chair. Earning two degrees from FSU, she
is an attorney. HUGO DE BEAUBIEN of Orlando, Chair-Elect. A Business School
and Stetson Law graduate, also an attorney. DR. RAYMOND COTTRELL, Orlando,
Executive Vice President is a graduate of the Chemistry Department, Florida
Medical School and is a physician. CHERYL BECKERT, Winter Haven, Secretary.
A graduate of the College of Human Sciences, she has Cheryl Beckert
Insurance. TOM GOLDSWORTHY, Edmond, Oklahoma, Treasurer. A College of
Education alum, he is Vice President of LTO Operating Company. DR. DAVID
SMITH continues as Past-Chair, as does JAMES H. MELTON, as President.
Along with all the happiness of our Alumni family, came family sadness. Our
sympathy is extended to Vice President Beverly Spencer, on the death of her
mother, and to our Alumni staff printer, Eugene Scott, on the death of his
wife, Ruby.
CAMPUS CAPSULE
FSU's branch campus in the Republic of Panama has negotiated a long-range
cooperative research and development agreement with the Tropical Test
Center in Panama that will benefit researchers and students at FSU and in
the entire state university system. The Tropical Test Center is one of the
U.S. Army's three sites for the testing of material in diverse climates.
Typical items tested in the pristine, humid forest environment include
clothing, building materials and geographical locating equipment. DR. RICK
JENKS, Director of the Panama Branch negotiated the contract.
Thanks to FSU's access to a 35,000 file database of tornadoes in the U.S.
since 1950, meteorology/oceanography Professor DR. JIM O'BRIEN and
undergraduate researcher MARK BOVE found that El Viejo - cooler waters off
Peru in the wintertime - caused an increase in the number of tornadoes from
March through May in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana
and Michigan. O'Brien, director of the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric
Prediction Studies and one of the world's foremost authorities on the El
Viejo and El Nino weather phenomena, announced the tornado-belt discovery
recently at a NASA meeting on climate variability.
DR. GREG CHOPPIN, Lawton Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, will receive
the 1997 Chemical Pioneer Award at the American Institute of Chemists'
national conference. Choppin, early in his career, co-discovered element
101, Mendelevium. Since then, he has continued to produce innovations in
the chemistry of the heaviest elements.
DR. FRED LEYSIEFFER has been appointed assistant vice president for
Academic Affairs in the Office of the Provost. A respected statistics
professor and faculty leader, Leysieffer will be responsible for budget
matters and the integration of fiscal issues into academic programs.
DR. BENTLEY SHELLAHAMER, Assistant Dean of the School of Music, is
conducting a band comprised of high school students from various parts of
the US on a 15 day tour of Europe. The band is organized by International
Bands of America, and will perform in London, Paris, and the Netherlands.
As emotional turmoil continues - the McVeigh sentencing, the Terry Nichols
trial and others - DR. CHARLES FIGLEY continues to draw praise for his role
in relieving the trauma of Oklahoma residents since the bombing in 1995.
Figley spearheaded the creation of Green Cross, an organization
headquartered at FSU that trained mental-health professionals in Oklahoma
after the bombing and now provides similar training and counselors for
crisis situations around the globe.
More than 300 Florida high-school girls and 500 boys came to campus and the
Capitol in June to hold political rallies, conventions and legislative
sessions at the annual GIRLS STATE and BOYS STATE. These events were
sponsored by the American Legion.
Sixty first-semester freshmen from all over the U.S. are participating in
FSU's SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM. The students, academically disadvantaged
or first-generation college students, are receiving support through
academic advising from the Multicultural Student Support Center, classroom
discussions with select administrators and faculty and informal gatherings
with faculty.
The National Science Foundation is again offering FSU'S YOUNG SCHOLARS
PROGRAM. This allows 36 Florida High School seniors to conduct class and
lab work with FSU math and science faculty and five Florida High School
teachers to complete the second part of a two-year grant for research and
in-service work.
At the end of the 1996-97 academic year, FSU's SCHOOL OF MOTION PICTURE,
TELEVISION, AND RECORDING ARTS leads the nation's film schools in awards,
honors, prizes and film festival screenings - won in competition against
both student and professional films. Dean RAY FIELDING says "...we are
enormously proud of our students. Virtually 100% of our graduates are
employed in the film industry within 12 months after graduating and 40% of
those stay in Florida."
Florida's Junior Miss, EMILY FLETCHER, a recent Lincoln High graduate in
Tallahassee, will begin her freshman year at FSU this fall. She has been
accepted as a theater major.
SPORTS
FSU trainer RANDY ORAVETZ received the National Athletic Trainers
Association Trainer Service Award at the group's annual meeting. Oravetz, a
'79 graduate, begins his 12th year as FSU's head trainer and has been at
the school for 19 seasons.
A hearty welcome to our new women's basketball coach, SUE SEMRAU. Semrau
comes to us from the University of Wisconsin where she was the school's top
assistant and recruiting coordinator, and her 1995 class was ranked eighth
nationally by the BLUE STAR INDEX.
We wish COACH KENNEDY well as he leaves for DePaul to become their head
basketball coach. Kennedy won 202 games in 11 seasons at FSU. He took FSU
to five NCAA Tournaments and two National Invitation Tournaments, coming
within a whisker of a Final Four appearance (1993) and a NIT championship
(1997). He guided FSU's transition to a competitive, if not yet dominant,
member of the nation's toughest basketball conference, and ran a program
that incurred no NCAA wrath.
JAMES COLLINS was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round
with the 37th pick in the NBA Draft, then traded to the Los Angeles
Clippers.
COACH MIKE MARTIN feels like a twister has hit his program and swooped away
a good portion of his team, both present and future. The "twister" of
course is the MLB draft. Many players are still negotiating their
contracts, but the latest two to sign were junior pitcher RANDY NILES with
the Oakland Athletics, and FSU football - baseball recruit, ALVIN MORROW
with the Milwaukee Brewers.
FOOTBALL season is approaching at a rapid pace, and several preseason
magazines have us ranked right up there at the top again. PREVIEW SPORTS
1997 COLLEGE FOOTBALL and '97 FOOTBALL ACTION, picked FSU No. 1. Lindy's
ranks FSU fourth behind Tennessee, Notre Dame and Nebraska and one spot
ahead of North Carolina. THE SPORTING NEWS has FSU fifth and named ANDRE
WADSWORTH as the only FSU player to its first-team All-America squad.
ATHLON is the only publication so far not to have FSU in its top five. The
Seminoles are ranked eighth by that publication and are predicted to finish
second in the ACC behind North Carolina. DARYL BUSH was named first team by
ATHLON and PLAYBOY. SHEVIN SMITH made PREVIEW SPORTS' first team, as did
WADSWORTH.
SEASON TICKET sales for FSU football are slightly ahead of last year's
pace. FSU has sold 43,100 season tickets, which is an increase of 680 over
this time last year. Season ticket packages ($109) still are available at
the Moore Athletic Center ticket office.
Hopefully hard times are over for JESUS HERNANDO. The former FSU offensive
lineman has signed on with the Kansas City Chiefs and accepted a $220,000
lawsuit settlement against an insurance company representing the driver of
a car that struck him last year when he stopped to help two women with car
trouble.
FSU alum and world record-holder KIM BATTEN ran the fastest time in the
world in her event this year at the recent USA Track and Field
Championships. Batten, the world record-holder in the 400 meter hurdles,
the 1996 Olympic silver medalist and the 1995 world champion, timed at
52.97 was trying to break her world mark of 52.61.
The VOLLEY BALL staff welcomes newcomer WU.DAN. She has an extensive
playing background which includes 9 years on the Chinese National Team. She
has participated in two Olympics ('88 and '92) and was named MVP in the
1988 Tournament as she led her team to the Bronze Medal. Wu.Dan has played
and coached at Columbia College and the University of Missouri.
DR. WILLIAM ODENEAL of Dunedin passed away recently. A retired FSU Physical
Education Professor, and coach of several national championship men's
volleyball teams, he was a member of the FSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

announced that we have surpassed the 1,000 brick mark and gifts continue to
come in for Westcott Plaza. Only two Seminole Clubs are reported as having
purchased bricks. Please urge your club to contribute!

Cancer Institute in Beverly Hills. Best wishes to this great Nole!
At the close of the legislative session, the MIAMI HERALD'S ranking of
state legislators was released. Seminoles listed in the top quarter rank
were: SENATOR KEN JENNE, Fort Lauderdale; REP. JOHN THRASHER, Orange Park;
REP. JIM KING, Jacksonville; REP. CYNTHIA CHESTNUT, Gainesville; REP. GREG
GAY, Cape Coral; REP. ALEX VILLALOBOS, West Dade; REP. BERYL ROBERTS-BURKE,
Miami; REP. KEITH ARNOLD, Fort Myers.
LES PANTIN '70 a distinguished Miami Seminole, has been named Chairman of
the Orange Bowl Committee. It is appropriate that a Florida State alum
heads the Orange Bowl Committee the year that the bowl hosts the National
Championship Game.
Alumnus J. MICHAEL PATE '68, has been named publisher of the TALLAHASSEE
DEMOCRAT. For the past 11 years he has been president and publisher of THE
SUN NEWS in Myrtle Beach. Pate and wife Judy met while both were members of
The Marching Chiefs.
A recent article in NEWSWEEK called alumnus JEFF HERIG - Cybercop. A
criminology alumnus, Herig working for the Florida Department of Law
Enforcement, founded the unit that pulls raw data off hard drives. As more
information is stored, more computers are listed in search warrants.
FSU grad and volleyball star/model GABRIELLE REECE has written her
autobiography, BIG GIRL IN THE MIDDLE. Reece, an internationally acclaimed
model is 6 feet 3 inches tall.
Receiving great reviews is the newly released movie ULEE'S GOLD starring
Peter Fonda. What does that have to do with us? It was filmed here in the
Panhandle, and producer VICTOR NUNEZ is a graduate of FSU 's Developmental
Research School and lives in Tallahassee.
Can you believe that a Seminole Club that is only 4 years old can donate or
commit itself to over $86,000? That is exactly what the SEMINOLE CLUB OF
CLAY COUNTY has done. Congratulations and appreciation to each member of
this outstanding club.
THE PALM COAST SEMINOLE CLUB presented a $500 scholarship to a high school
student who will attend FSU, at their annual scholarship awards banquet.
The club has presented $3,000 in scholarship funds since its inception in
1993. This hard working club will also be working the Speed Weeks 1997
concession stand this July 4th weekend.
The SEMINOLE CLUB OF LEE COUNTY received a record number of applications
for scholarships this year. It was a difficult choice, but four lucky Lee
County students headed for FSU were given $1,000 awards.
Membership in the ATLANTA SEMINOLE CLUB is up 15% with 900 members. They
also report active Softball teams. Men's and coed teams are doing well.
