1998 June Patchwork

May is the month for college baseball and aren't we proud of our Seminoles?
This '98 season was to have been a building year and who would have thought
that this FSU BASEBALL TEAM would be one of the eight teams at the College
World Series? Thank you COACH MIKE MARTIN, other coaches, players, parents
and fans (including the animals). We love SEMINOLE BASEBALL!

May is also the second month of the BOWDEN TOUR and other COACHES' GOLF
TOURNAMENTS. Special thanks to all you Seminole Clubs that work so hard on
these tournaments and banquets.

I also want to tell you how proud I am of you Seminole Club leaders. I just
returned from a CASE workshop on Alumni Clubs at the University of North
Carolina/Greensboro. Never have I felt prouder of all that you do compared
to what other alumni and boosters do for their alma matas! While in NC, I
had the opportunity to meet with members of the TRIAD and TRIANGLE Clubs,
and discuss among many topics the pregame receptions planned for the NC
State and Wake Forest games. While I was in NC, JIM MELTON was in New York
coordinating the pregame reception at the Meadowlands. The DELAWARE VALLEY
and NEW YORK CITY SEMINOLES CLUBS will host this kickoff event.

Fall, football and LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE will be here before we know it. If
you don't have your game tickets and room reservations, GET THEM NOW -
SEPTEMBER 17,18,19! Also, make sure that you are completing your Annual
Club Report to Seminole Boosters, and your Outstanding Club Entry due to us
at the Alumni Office by AUGUST 26th. Guidelines are printed on the back of
this issue.

CAMPUS CAPSULE
FSU faculty and staff recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the
ratification of the university's constitution. Although the constitution
was in place earlier for Florida State College for Women, it was ratified
by the faculty of the new FSU on May 19, l948, and became the basis for
faculty governance. According to Dean of the Faculties STEVE EDWARDS, "One
of the outstanding characteristics of FSU is that it is a liberal
arts-based graduate research facility."

The Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and
Consumer Sciences has continued the accreditation of the FSU COLLEGE OF
HUMAN SCIENCES. Our college is one of only 62 human sciences units across
the nation to be recognized by the AAFCS.

The musicology department in the FSU SCHOOL OF MUSIC has accomplished the
virtually impossible - three doctoral students have been awarded
prestigious Fulbright scholarships at one time. This is the only time in
the history of the university that one department has had three. These new
Fulbright scholars are: DENNIS HUTCHISON, who will study historical
musicology in Germany; MICHAEL O'CONNOR, who will study historical
musicology in Spain; and JENNIFER LADKANI, who will study ethnomusicology
in Jordan.

FSU physics and astronomy students are now receiving one-on-one instruction
from their own private tutor - their home computer. Along with many other
departments, physics currently uses e-mail and web sites for checking
homework and relaying basic messages. According to Physics Department
Chairman KIRBY KEMPER, the department is moving toward a computerized
system allowing students not only to e-mail their teachers about
assignments or exchange ideas in on-line chat rooms but to tutor students
and enable them to draw complex diagrams on computers.

Beginning in Fall 1998 students seeking careers with international
organizations can complete both the Master of Public Administration degree
and the Master of International Affairs degree simultaneously. The dual
degree program recognizes both the growing international opportunities for
students in the global economy and the sound preparation needed in both
administration and international affairs. The SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY'S
namesake and faculty member, GOVERNOR REUBIN ASKEW, '51, served as U.S.
Trade Ambassador and maintains active interests in this area.

U.S. AMBASSADOR TO VIETNAM, PETE PETERSON, was recently honored by the
University. A reception was held in his honor at the College of Law Rotunda
giving university and governmental officials an opportunity to visit and
hear plans for a new Vietnam.

ROBERT M. MORGAN, director of the FSU LEARNING SYSTEMS INSTITUTE, has
recently received the Thomas F. Gilbert Distinguished Professional
Achievement Award from the International Society for Performance
Improvement. The honor, given by one of the top organizations in the field,
has only been bestowed upon nine people in the last 30 years. The
institute, charged with improving and economizing the university's
instructional programs, currently is working with the Open University of
Britain on a distance learning initiative.

DR. JANICE A. DALY, director of the THAGARD STUDENT HEALTH CENTER, was
named the 1998 President's Humanitarian of the Year at the 17th Annual
Employee Recognition Ceremony. Praised as a dedicated and sincere role
model, Daly is known for running the Thagard Student Health Center with
concern and fairness and giving of herself in very personal ways.

More than 300 young women will converge on Landis Hall, June 12-19 for
GIRLS STATE, followed by 500 BOYS STATE participants at Kellum Hall, June
21-27. Those attending, in addition to their program in state and local
government, will benefit from a partnership between Tallahassee Community
College and FSU. All participants will earn three semester hours of college
credit, which can be used at any college or university in Florida. In
addition, ten of the students, five boys and five girls, will be awarded a
college scholarship to attend TCC for two years, followed by FSU for two
more. Scholarships will be awarded based on a committee's recommendation,
as well as a letter written by the students.

The 1998-99 school year holds special meaning for the SCHOOL OF THEATRE.
This will be a celebration of twenty-five years of excellence since the
Department of Theatre officially became an independent School within the
University in 1973. For information on FSU theatre productions, call
850-644-6500.

SPORTS
The FSU athletic board approved a $25.6 million operating budget, and will
submit it to President SANDY D'ALEMBERTE for approval. Total expenditures,
including $3.47 million for facilities repair and upgrade, is projected to
be $30.3 million. The budget includes $60,000 of planning money for the
1998-99 academic year in regard to the possibility of starting rowing for
women. The board's recommendation to begin rowing during the fall of 1999
is contingent upon FSU student athletics fees being increased. The budget
also reflects an anticipated monetary increase for the future use of the
state plane by FSU athletic department officials, including football coach
Bobby Bowden.

It is now official. DR. BRIAN MAND has accepted the position of Executive
Associate Athletic Director at Cincinnati. His responsibilities will
include oversight of the Academic, Compliance and Student Services
Programs, as well as a number of sports including baseball. We wish him all
the best as he begins his duties on July 1st.

Former Assistant Compliance Director SHEILA BENTON has accepted a position
with the NCAA National Office as a Membership Services Representative.
Membership Services oversees the NCAA's Compliance and Legislative Services
Offices. Benton will complete her Doctorate in Sport Administration this
summer.

Finalists for the color commentator join the Seminole Network recently were
trying out for the position that VIC PRINZI held for years prior to his
death. The candidates are all former players: MONK BONASORTE, JOE WESSEL,
KEITH JONES and ERIC LUALLEN.

The SEMINOLE FOOTBALL TEAM barely missed earning the academic achievement
award given annually by the American Football Coaches Association. The
honor is given to programs that graduate 70 percent of its players. FSU's
1992 recruiting class graduated 66 percent of its members to break a
two-year streak of graduating 70 percent or more. Excelling however, was
the grade point average (GPA) of all our athletes. This spring the
cumulative GPA for all sports was a record high of 2.91. The men's
BASKETBALL TEAM improved to 2.48, and the FOOTBALL team had a 2.30 GPA. The
women's BASKETBALL TEAM earned a 3.10 GPA; the BASEBALL TEAM produced a
2.7; and the SEMINOLE VOLLEYBALL TEAM had a 3.34 GPA.

It must not go unnoticed that FSU is just one of four Division I schools to
put the FOOTBALL TEAM in a bowl game, its BASKETBALL TEAM in the NCAA
Tournament and the BASEBALL TEAM in an NCAA Regional. The other schools are
Washington and ACC members Clemson and North Carolina. FSU was the only one
of the four to make the College World Series.

COACH BOBBY BOWDEN has been named Captain for Team Florida, a team of local
organ transplant recipients planning to compete in the 1998 U.S. Transplant
Games, sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and presented by
the National Kidney Foundation. The Games will be held August 5-8 in
Columbus, Ohio, on the campus of the Ohio State University.

All Seminoles are watching as some of our star athletes are recovering from
injuries. Noseguard COREY SIMON underwent another shoulder surgery, this
time to remove scar tissue. Others working hard to be ready for the 1998
season are DAN KENDRA, DAVY FORD, ROSS BRANNON and LAVERANUES COLES. Head
trainer RANDY ORAVETZ and strength and conditioning coach DAVE VAN HALANGER
are keeping watchful eyes on these recovering Noles in preparation for the
team's return on August 4th, school starting on the 24th and the preseason
game on the 31st.

PETER WARRICK has returned from a trip to Phoenix where he took part in a
photo shoot for the PLAYBOY All-American team. The wide receiver has also
been named to THE SPORTING NEWS preseason team.

CNN recently visited the home of Assistant Strength Coach RON MILLER and
wife CINDY to do a feature on ANDRE WADSWORTH and PETER BOULWARE. The
feature entitled STAND BY ME is about their friendship. Both Wadsworth and
Boulware testified how the ministry of CHAMPIONS FOR CHRIST has played a
vital part in their lives and friendship. Look for the feature in August
before the NFL preseason begins.

The Florida-Georgia High School All Star Football Game - featuring such FSU
signees as offensive lineman COREY WHITAKER, linebacker MICHAEL HAMILTON,
defensive back STANFORD SAMUELS and defensive lineman RIAN CASON - will be
televised live Saturday, June 20th, 6:00pm on Sunshine Network.

FSU season tickets for 1998 are sold out! Officials said the 46,700
season-ticket packages sold are the most ever for Doak Campbell Stadium,
whose capacity is 80,000. It is believed to be the first sellout of season
tickets since 1992, FSU's first season in the ACC. Florida is the only game
so far sold out of individual game tickets. Only a few tickets remain for
the USC game.
Three of FSU's four women's basketball recruits were honored by USA TODAY.
APRIL TRAYLOR (Martinsville, IN) was named USA TODAY's Indiana co-player of
the year and also received All-American honors from PARADE magazine.
LAKEISHA SPRINGLE (Thomasville, GA) and ANGELA SUTTON (Cleveland, TN) were
also named honorable mention All-USA.

The only Seminole taken in the first round of this year's Major League
Baseball draft was J.D. DREW, who was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals with
the fifth pick. Other Noles taken were pitcher SCOTT PROCTOR in the fifth
round by the Los Angeles Dodgers, catcher JEREMY SALAZAR in the 19th round
by Philadelphia, and first baseman MATT WOODWARD in the 24th round by
Seattle. Senior shortstop BROOKS BADEAUX signed a free agent contract with
the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

A sad note along with all the good news of baseball is the death of former
FSU baseball coach FRED HATFIELD. Hatfield coached at FSU from 1964-68 and
continued to make Tallahassee his home. At 74 he lost his year long battle
with cancer.

THE MEN'S GOLF TEAM ended its season with a 12th place finish at the NCAA
East Regional held at the Melrose Golf Course, SC. They were just seven
strokes behind the 11th place team, with only 11 teams progressing to the
NCAA Championships. Senior GEORGE McNEILL was one of 10 athletes selected
to the All-ACC Mens Golf Team. McNeill, who finished third when FSU won the
U.S. Collegiate Golf Championships and finished second at the Billy
Hitchcock Intercollegiate, was the only Nole selected.

NETWORKING
The COLLEGE OF EDUCATION is the beneficiary of its first million dollar
donation, a gift from alumna SANDRA SCHULTZ. This contribution is the first
of its size for the College and will support the first Eminent Scholar
Chair in the College of Education, as well as four scholarships. Dr.
Schultz is currently a professor of Health and Physical Education at the
Miami-Dade Community College.

The School Board of Pinellas County and the COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, in
cooperation with the Florida Lottery, hosted the ninth annual NOLES HOLES
one-club golf tournament in Largo. The event raises approximately $8,000
each year to fund scholarships for Pinellas County students currently
enrolled at FSU and majoring in education.

The recent Broward County Seminole Club Golf Tournament had a very special
team of Florida Seminole Tribal members participating. Hollywood Council
Representative MAX OSCEOLA headed the team of MARCELUS OSCEOLA, MITCHELL
OSCEOLA, BILL OSCEOLA and DINO DOCTOR.

The SEMINOLE CLUB OF NORTH TEXAS (Dallas) reports a full schedule of
activities. In May they held a golf tournament at one of the 10 best public
courses in the country, and two weeks later they had a block of tickets for
a Texas Rangers game. Planned club activities include an ACC Picnic, the
Fall Kickoff party, game watching parties, participation in College Nights,
and a reception at the spectacular Dallas Christmas Concert. They are
following in the steps of Seminoles in other states and are initiating a
signed petition for a TEXAS SEMINOLE license plate! Word has it that a
successful developer and an FSU alum, builds large apartment complexes
throughout Texas. It seems that every complex has a pool and if you go to
the higher floors and look down you see that every pool is in the shape of
an FSU logo (be it Osceola or a tomahawk).

THE GREATER ORLANDO SEMINOLE CLUB continues with an outstanding list of
guest speakers. Recently they have had COACH MARK RICHT, and at another
event COACH ODELL HAGGINS with his bride ROBIN. Joining the Haggins as a
surprise was close friend and teammate, DEDRICK DODGE. VOICE OF THE
SEMINOLES, GENE DECKERHOFF, is scheduled for their Fall Kickoff Barbeque.
The Orlando Seminoles have taken an active role in trying to get at least
the Marching Chiefs pep band at all football games.

THE PALM BEACH COUNTY SEMINOLES recently hosted their annual New Student
Reception. The BROWARD COUNTY SEMINOLES are currently planning theirs which
will be held next month. GENE DECKERHOFF will kick off the fall for the
Palm Beach Noles on August 15th.

DAN WEGNER is the new President of the SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SEMINOLE CLUB.
If being an engineer and club president are not enough, he will be
competing in the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS MASTERS SWIM MEET in Morrocco.

Heisman Trophy quarterback, and now NBA point guard for the New York
Knicks, CHARLIE WARD, will spend his off-season reaching out to children
across the East Coast. Just last week, Ward, who has a FSU bachelor's
degree in therapeutic recreation, sponsored a camp in Tallahassee for
abused and neglected children. He will participate in a Big Brothers and
Big Sisters golf tournament and will conduct numerous basketball camps and
clinics this summer.
