June Patchwork

NOMAHA, the OSCEOLA said, and that just about summed up the end of Florida
State's outstanding baseball season. The Tallahassee DEMOCRAT said
"Seminoles AuBurned" which justly states the team that ended the Seminoles
'97 season. Though we finished 2nd instead of first, the NCAA East Regional
in Dick Howser Stadium ranked 4th in total attendance among the 8
tournaments played. Total attendance was 27,404, the 1st time that FSU
tournament attendance has gone over 20,000.

We may not be watching the Seminole baseball players in Omaha, but we are
certainly watching them as today in Major League Baseball Draft Day.

Other accolades for J.D. Drew include being named the 1997 COLLEGIATE
BASEBALL'S Player of the Year; the recipient of the Howser Trophy as the
nation's top player; and being named FSU's first ACC Player of the Year.

Jeremy Morris was selected to the second team by COLLEGIATE BASEBALL and
named the ACC Tournament's Most Valuable Player Award. Morris was also
named to the All ACC Team with Drew and pitcher Randy Choate.

CAMPUS CAPSULE

FSU's OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS is offering a 15-week residence
program of study in Spain for the first time this fall. Previously, FSU
students traveled to Spain for a four-week summer program only. The
semester-long residence program will be housed in Torremolinos, a small
fishing village only several miles away from the city of Malaga. The summer
program is not housed in Torremolinos, but in Madrid. Call 644-3271 for
additional information.

This is the second year of FSU's SPECIALIZATION AND EXCHANGE PROGRAM, which
brings master's degree students from Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble,
France, to FSU's Supercomputer Computations Research Institute. The
agreement between the two universities allows students to study a
specialized area of computational mathematics for four months at SCRI under
the supervision of Professor I.M.Navon, the program director.

FSU's SCHOOL OF CRIMINOLOGY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE will be the recipient of
one of the most respected international journals addressing drug policy
issues. The 25-year old JOURNAL OF DRUG ISSUES Inc., will be owned and
operated by the School in an agreement with the journal and family of its
founding editor, the late Richard L. Rachin. A gift of $10,00 from the
Rachin family and transfer of funds from the Journal will constitute a gift
of $151,000, which is eligible for a matching state grant of $50,000. The
gift will create the Richard L. Rachin Graduate Fellowship and Endowment
fund for criminology and criminal justice students.

FSU is the first and only of Florida's state universities to do away with
traditional report cards. FSU students now get their grades by calling a
toll-free number and punching in a code known only to them. Other schools
are looking at this process as a great money saver.

For the first time students at the Florida A&M University/Florida State
University College of Engineering will enter a solar-powered car that they
have built in a qualifying race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. If
their creation - a steel and fiberglass model with 500 solar cells - passes
final inspection, they will earn the right to compete June 19 in
Sunrayce'97, a challenging, 1,200 mile collegiate competition from
Indianapolis to Denver sponsored by General Motors, Electronic Data Systems
Corp. and the U.S. Department of Energy.

A Holocaust film made by FSU student, MICHAEL MARCUS, who just completed
his sophomore year, will soon be distributed to schools nationwide. A
nine-minute video documentary on the Holocaust which Marcus filmed in 1994
and '95, has impressed Congressmen as well as the American Jewish
Committee, who will pick up the tab for distribution.

An incoming freshman, LEALAN JONES, and a friend of his, Lloyd Newman,
recently received this years Peabody award, broadcasting's most
distinguished honor. Growing up in the Ida B. Wells ghetto district of
Chicago where drugs and murder are a way of life, the young men won the
Peabody for "Remorse", their radio documentary on the murder of a 5-year
old in 1994. They have produced other documentaries and recently written a
book, OUR AMERICA - LEFE AND DEATH ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO.
President D'Alemberte and his wife Patsy Palmer met this amazing young man
last year and had him visit FSU as their guests. The story will continue as
he becomes a Seminole this fall.

The Honorable RICHARD ERVIN was honored with a F lorida State University
Honorary Degree. Selected for his many years of public service as Florida's
Attorney General and Justice of the Florida Supreme Court, Justice Ervin
expressed the impact that FSU has made on him, his family, the state, the
nation and the world.

DR. MARIE COWART, Professor of Urban and Regional Planning was reelected
president of the Faculty Senate during its April meeting.

MAX CARRAWAY, the university registrar, received the President's
Humanitarian of the Year Award at the Employee Recognition Ceremony.
Carraway was given a $1000 check, a plaque and a reserved parking place for
one year. An alumnus, he has been the registrar since 1982 and oversees all
the academic matters at FSU from monitoring student records to scheduling
classrooms.

English Professor JANET BURROWAY has adapted her novel OPENING NIGHTS for
radio. With the help of actors from the School of Theater and Actors
Repertoire Theater of Tallahassee, the novel will air on Florida Public
Radio in nine consecutive half-hour segments on Sunday nights, starting on
June 8 at 7:30 p.m., and later on National Public Radio.

State geographer and FSU professor DR. ED FERNALD, and ELIZABETH D. PURDUM,
a research associate, have recently completed their work on the revision of
the ATLAS OF FLORIDA. The 288-page reference volume, produced by FSU's
Institute for Science and Public Affairs, covers many other facets of
Florida, including natural environment, history, culture, population,
economy, tourism, recreation, infrastructure and planning, plus a section
on the origin of place names.

Psychology Professor DR. GEORGE WEAVER has been appointed the new associate
dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Professor PETER RAY has been
reappointed chair of the department of meteorology, and Professor TOM
ROBERTS has been appointed chair of the department of biological science,
both for terms ending in summer 2000.

SPORTS

SEMINOLE BASEBALL TEAM won all five games at the ACC tournament in St.
Petersburg, claiming for the second time since FSU joined the conference
the ACC TITLE. The Noles undefeated fete marked the first time since 1991
any team had made that accomplishment. The FSU attendance averaged over
4,000 in attendance, with a total tournament attendance of 32,141 fans over
six days. J.D. DREW, JEREMY MORRIS and RANDY CHOATE were named to the
ALL-ACC First Team, while GEOFF SPRAGUE and ZACH DIAZ were named to the
Second Team.

Those of us who were lucky enough to be in St. Petersburg had a wonderful
time.! Wonder if we can start wishing for a similar fantastic time in 1998?
It has been announced there will be a four-game series at the UNIVERSITY OF
HAWAII that follows a three-game set at ARIZONA STATE.

Five FSU SOFTBALL PLAYERS were named to the Louisville Slugger All-Region
team. MYSSI CALKINS, KRISTY FUENTES and MISTY MOLIN were named to the 1st
team, while WENDY BRAYE and KRISTY HULL made the second team. Ending a
great season, it was a disappointment that a regional invitation was not
extended.

The FSU FOOTBALL PROGRAM earned honorable mention honors from the COLLEGE
FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION for having graduation rate over 70 percent. It was the
third time in four years FSU was recognized for the accomplishment. FSU was
one of 16 institutions that qualified for academic achievement by the
Touchdown Club of Memphis, Tenn. The ACC placed five schools on the list,
including Duke which won the top graduation award for the ninth time since
the award was established in 1981, with a perfect 100 percent graduation
rate. North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest joined FSU and Duke.

In football, FSU linebacker DARYL BUSH has been selected to PLAYBOY's
ALL-AMMERICAN TEAM, which is considered the top preseason honor for a
college football player. Three more FSU football players have undergone
surgery in the off-season: tight end MELVIN PEARSALL(shoulder), safety
ROBERT HAMMOND (ankle) and defensive lineman GREG SPIRES (ankle). POOH BEAR
WILLIAMS has not won the "battle of the bulge", but has changed positions
to tight end.

FSU's BASKETBALL team which lost to Michigan in the NIT in March will make
its second appearance in the Preseason NIT this fall when it hosts Loyola,
Md., on Nov. 17.

CHRIS GOBRECHT, the WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH for only one year abruptly
left Tallahassee for a job at her alma mater - the University of Southern
California. The university is filing a law suit and the position is
currently being advertised,

LADY SEMINOLES VOLLEYBALL TEAM participated in a round-robin tournament
against Jacksonville University, Florida Community College and University
of North Florida. The team played well and ended the day with a 7-2 game
record.

Tiger Woods in not the only new face doing TV commercials for golf club
companies. There is also FSU's DR. DON VELLER. The former football and golf
coach, is featured in a current commercial for Taylor Made's Bubble Burner
driver. Veller shoots his age (84) on a bad day and has been an age shooter
for quite a few years.

NETWORKING

There is a follow-up story of the EMERITUS WEEKEND in April. It seems as
though some of the FSCW celebrants were not sufficiently satisfied with
only the FSU flag being topped on their HERITAGE TOWER. Following the
Saturday night banquet, one enterprising member had made three torches of
plywood, and a group of the ladies stuck the torches in the builders sand
by the tower foundation and used tiki lamps to light them. Twenty-three
youthful ladies-girls of the forty's, after lighting their torches stood
around singing FSCW songs.

Another show of ageless college friendship is when Leonard Voyles, of the
CLAY COUNTY SEMINOLE CLUB, loaded a flat bed truck with trees and took them
over to BAY COUNTY to show fellow Seminole LEO BAGGETT and other Panama
City Seminoles how to have a tree sale and make lots of money for their
Club.

Sincere thank-yous go out to members of the PINELLAS SEMINOLE CLUB, THE
SEMINOLE CLUB OF ST. PETERSBURG, and the HILLSBOROUGH SEMINOLE CLUB for
their wonderful job of hosting daily pregame receptions at the ACC
Tournament. Having a place to meet and greet and get reacquainted was
wonderful. Special thanks to KEN BOURKE of Clearwater, who I believe headed
the coordination of the events.

MARTIN COUNTY SEMINOLES hosted a reception recently for DR. ERNIE LANFORD,
FSU's MENS GOLF COACH. A golf tournament followed the next day and a good
time was had by all.

The newly restored BRYAN HALL will be dedicated on Friday of Homecoming
Weekend, October 31st. If any of you have fond memories of living there, or
stories from others of its earlier years, would you please contact Scott
Atwell at 904-644-9643 or me at 904-644-2761.

As we enter hurricane season, we will be advised by one of our own. Alumnus
ANDY DEVANAS is the new state meteorologist, Florida's official sultan of
storm. He will keep track of weather that threatens Florida - be it a
hurricane, freeze or winds carrying hazardous materials.
